Sami Zayn Achievements
Before Sami Zayn was, well, Sami Zayn, Rami Sebei made a name for himself in the U.S. indie scene as El Generico, a masked Mexican luchador whose “Olé!” catchphrase somehow became impossible to forget. From 2002 to 2013, he wrestled under that mask, jumping between Los Angeles’ Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Philadelphia’s Ring of Honor, quietly grinding his way to recognition. In PWG alone, he didn’t just show up—he won the World Championship twice and the Tag Team Championship five times, proving that even behind a mask and a gimmick, talent and hustle have a way of demanding attention.

World Wrestling Entertainment
Zayn later defeated Kidd twice to end the feud, once in a singles match on the July 17 episode of NXT; as well in a tag match with Adam Rose against Gabriel and Kidd, which was the first round of a tournament for an opportunity at the NXT Tag Team Championship. Zayn and Rose lost in the second round to Kalisto and Sin Cara. When Zayn, Kidd and Tyler Breeze each staked a claim for an NXT Championship match, champion Neville agreed to face all three in a four-way match at the next NXT Takeover event to hype that match, Zayn and Neville appeared on the September 8, 2014 episode of Raw where they defeated Breeze and Kidd.
Zayn’s celebration after the NXT Championship match on NXT Takeover: R Evolution would be cut short later on when the debuting Kevin Owens attacked him. Owens later claimed that Sami betrayed their friendship due to him coming to WWE first. Owens would challenge Zayn for the title at NXT Takeover : Rival, Zayn would be knocked out by Owens after receiving 4 powerbombs from him, causing him to lose the title.
Professional Wrestling Career
Rami Sebei kicked off his wrestling journey under the guidance of Jerry Tuite and Savio Vega, making his pro debut on March 1, 2002, in Quebec’s FLQ promotion as the awkwardly charming Stevie McFly. Just a few months later, he reemerged in the International Wrestling Syndicate as El Generico at the Scarred For Life event, snagging a count-out win that hinted at bigger things to come. The early years were a whirlwind of memorable moments: losing a three-way to Carl Ouellet with Kevin Steen in the mix, then turning the tables by defeating Steen in their first singles showdown at Payback’s A Bitch. At IWS’s fifth anniversary in 2004, Generico finally wrestled the World Heavyweight Championship away from PCO, only to see it slip through his fingers that same night to a relentless Kevin Steen, who had fought tooth and nail to earn his shot.
