Nikhat Zareen’s Olympic campaign ends with shocking loss to China’s Yu

Nikhat Zareen, the two-time world champ in the 50kg category, faced a tough reality at her Olympic debut, bowing out after a surprising 5-0 loss to China’s Wu Yu, the Asian Games gold medalist. Coming in as an unseeded player, Nikhat showed flashes of her usual fire, especially in her first-round win over Germany’s Maxi Karina Kloetzer, but against Wu Yu—already the reigning world champion in flyweight (52kg) and having skipped the opening round—she struggled to find her rhythm. It stings a bit seeing a strong medal hopeful from India exit so decisively, but honestly, the level Wu Yu plays at is something else; it’s one of those humbling “wow, that’s another planet” moments. Nikhat fought hard, but sometimes even world-class credentials meet a wall that day, and today was just one of those days.

Interesting facts about

Nikhat Zareen has been posted as Staff Officer in the circle office of AC Guards, Hyderabad, Bank of India. Nikhat Zareen has three more sisters, Nikhat’s two elder sisters are doctors and a younger sister is a badminton player. Nikhat Zareen was trained in boxing at the age of 13 by his uncle Shamshamuddin. People also call Nikhat Zareen by the name of “Second Mary Kom”.

From losing the trial to Mary Kom to representing India at the Paris Olympics 2026

Nikhat Zareen’s journey has been anything but smooth—back in 2019, she ran into Mary Kom in the Olympic qualifiers and got crushed 9-1, missing Tokyo 2020—but now, Paris 2026 is her stage. She started strong, beating Germany’s Maxi Carina Kloetzer in the round of 32, and next up is a daunting clash with China’s Wu Yu, the reigning world champion—no sugarcoating how brutal that matchup is.

Paris Olympics: Boxer Nikhat Zareen’s Olympic dream comes to an early end

In Short

  • Nikhat Zareen loses to China’s Wu Yu by unanimous decision
  • Nikhat was comfortably outclassed by the top seed
  • Only Lovlina and Nishant remain in medal contention for India in boxing

Paris 2026 turned out to be a rollercoaster for India’s boxing squad. Nikhat Zareen, one of the country’s brightest stars, started strong with a win over Maxi Kloetzer but ran into a brick wall against China’s Wu Yu, losing in the early rounds—split in the first two but completely outclassed in the final, all five judges siding with Wu. Nikhat couldn’t quite make her height advantage count, while Wu, fresh after a first-round bye, looked almost untouchable.

It’s frustrating to see a two-time world champion go unseeded because the IOC doesn’t recognize the IBA, leading to such brutal early matchups. Elsewhere, Lovlina Borgohain and Nishant Dev gave fans hope, reaching the quarter-finals, with Lovlina coming close to a medal in the 75kg clash against Sunniva Hofstad and Nishant beating Jose Gabriel Rodriguez Tenorio in the Round of 16.
