Early life
Burroughs comes from Winslow Township, New Jersey, specifically the Sicklerville neighborhood. At the age of five, he became the first person in his family to wrestle when he carried a wrestling flyer home from elementary school. He continued on to Winslow Township High School, where he participated in football, track, and wrestling as a three-sport athlete. Though he was a freshman and weighed 130 pounds, he gave up on his dream of being a wide receiver in the NFL to concentrate on wrestling. In his final year (2006), he won the NHSCA national championship, the state.

Burroughs follows Christ. He has discussed his beliefs in public, stating, “You will never feel fulfilled by a gold medal. A relationship with Jesus Christ is the most rewarding thing there is in life.
