Rey Mysterio Biography 2026 Age, Height, Weight, Net Worth, Salary, Born, Parents and More

Rey Mysterio Biography: Óscar Gutiérrez Rubio—better known as Rey Mysterio—was born on December 11, 1974, and somehow turned being “small for a wrestler” into a superpower that makes every move feel impossible.

Rey Mysterio Biography

Rey Mysterio didn’t exactly follow the traditional path—he started wrestling in Mexico, dropping out of school to chase a dream that most people would call insane, and along the way became the nephew of another wrestling legend, Rey Misterio.

Like many luchadores, he wore a mask religiously until 1999, when The Outsiders forced him to unmask—a moment that could’ve broken someone else but barely slowed him down. Over the years, he stacked up titles like it was casual—eight different WCW reigns across cruiserweight, tag team, and even cruiserweight tag team divisions—and somehow still kept the feeling of being that scrappy, high-flying underdog.

Early life

Óscar Gutiérrez was born on December 11, 1974, in Chula Vista, California, a suburb of San Diego County. His parents, Maria del Rosario and Roberto Gutiérrez (1948–2026), were both Mexican nationals with modest and uneducated backgrounds. Maria worked as a house cleaner, and Roberto was a factory worker. Gutiérrez spent his childhood commuting daily across the border from Tijuana to San Diego for school. With the approval of his parents, he dropped out of high school. He has three brothers.

Rey Mysterio Career

Mysterio, trained by his uncle Rey Misterio, jumped into wrestling at just 14, grinding it out on the independent scene before most teens were figuring out what a mortgage was. By 1992, he landed with Asistencia Asesoría y Administración, then bounced around ECW, WWA, and Wrestle Association R—basically everywhere a young luchador could get his name out there. In 1996, WCW scooped him up, and that’s when things really got interesting: he wasn’t just wrestling, he was showing the U.S. what lucha libre could really do, flipping the script with high-flying moves that made everyone stop and watch, whether they wanted to or not.

Feud with Eddie Guerrero

Mysterio then teamed up with Eddie Guerrero to win the Tag Team Championship back from the Bashams at No Way Out. In a departure from traditional booking, the new champions did not defend their title at WrestleMania 21, but instead had a match against each other which Rey won. Three months later, at ECW One Night Stand, Mysterio faced and defeated long-time rival Psychosis for the first time in nearly five years.

Guerrero and Mysterio continued to feud, with Guerrero threatening to reveal a secret he and Mysterio shared involving Mysterio’s real-life son Dominik, unless Mysterio deferred to Guerrero’s authority. Guerrero later revealed that, in the storyline, he was Dominik’s biological father. The storyline went that Guerrero knew Mysterio was having trouble starting his own family, so Guerrero left Dominik as a baby with Mysterio and his wife Angie to raise. In subsequent weeks, Guerrero threatened to take custody of Dominik, drawing up custody papers and having his lawyer present them to Mysterio.

Career

He stands only 5-foot-6 and barely weighs 175 pounds, but a lack of size hasn’t stop the incomparable Rey Mysterio from achieving giant dreams in WWE including capturing the WWE Championship, two World Heavyweight Championships, two Intercontinental Titles, three United States Titles, five Tag Team Titles, three WWE Cruiserweight Titles, or outlasting 29 other Superstars to win the Royal Rumble as the No. 2 entrant. Whether he is standing up to a dangerous giant like Kane or flying down from the top of a steel cage, The Ultimate Underdog is known for refusing to be intimidated inside the ring.

Trained in the proud Mexican tradition of lucha libre before he was even old enough to drive, Rey Mysterio adopted his ring name in tribute to his uncle and hid his face under a mask as lucha custom dictates. In a world of hooded highflyers, the exhilarating Mysterio stood out enough to earn the attention of ECW and WCW, where his thrilling bouts with such rivals as Eddie Guerrero and Psicosis became the stuff of legend among sports-entertainment fans. His greatest successes, however, were realized after joining WWE in 2002.

First establishing himself in the cruiserweight and tag team divisions, the Mexican Superstar soon proved that size doesn’t matter when he beat the odds to win the Royal Rumble Match in 2006. From there, Mysterio accomplished the inconceivable when he won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22, becoming the smallest Superstar ever to hold that title.

Rey Mysterio’s Endorsements

Rey pulls in serious cash from endorsement deals, mostly thanks to WWE merch that fans just can’t resist. His masks—always flashy, instantly recognizable—sell out like hotcakes, and the graphic tees aren’t far behind. It’s the kind of money that comes from talent, personality, and a brand people actually care about, a reminder that in wrestling, what happens outside the ring can hit just as hard as the action inside it.

House

Rey Mysterio calls Chula Vista, California, home, living there with his family in a place that’s as impressive as it sounds—about 4,300 square feet, five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a price tag north of a million bucks. It’s the kind of house that gives plenty of space for family chaos, wrestling memorabilia, and maybe a few moments of quiet—though with his energy, quiet is probably rare.

Car Collection

Mysterio is known for his impressive car collection, which includes several exotic vehicles:

  • Rolls-Royce Phantom: $460,000
  • Lamborghini Aventador: $500,000
  • McLaren 12C: $240,000
  • Jaguar XKR: $496,000
  • Audi R8: $145,000
  • Dodge Challenger RT: $73,000
